In 2005 the VoV of Louisiana was asked to volunteer its services to help get Vets for Vets program started to help raise money for Volunteer Services at Overton Brooks VA Hospital. Although we were not the original framers of the Vets for Vets program. (That distinction goes to the Barksdale Freedom Riders and the local ABATE Chapter) we were a core contributor and continue to be today. The satisfaction felt from helping fellow veterans in our local community was a feeling of such pride and accomplishment that defines what the VoV is all about. In 2007 our chapter was approached by Dr. Ronald Key of Woodys Home. Being a motorcycle enthusiast himself and a witness to the generosity and solidarity of the motorcycle community in our area he was asking for our help. Of course the next logical step in the growth of our chapter was to sponsor an event of our own and this seemed to be the perfect opportunity to try our wings so to speak. 2008 was our First Annual Woodys Ride Home. We had the blessings of the North Louisiana Coalition of Motorcyclists and volunteers from ABATE and the offer from Harrhas Casino to help out, we were off to a running start and nothing was going to hold us back, well the weather maybe, a little. But the bands showed up as well as the vendors and some very brave bikers who were not going to let a little thing like a tornado or two stop them. With lots of help from every motorcycle club in the area and even a few from as far away as North Dakota it could not have gone any better, until this year. 2009 The American Legion Riders of post 14 in Shreveport, knowing the challenges a community based shelter for veterans face asked if they could be of assistance. With the support of Harrhas quickly fading it seemed as if God had smiled upon us and sent The American Legion over to lend a hand, and what a hand. The Fourth Annual Woodys Ride Home will be held at The Lowe McFarland American Legion Hall Post 14 on South Lakeshore in Shreveport. A really great facility on the shores of Cross Lake, covers several acres, indoor facilities, boat launch, pier, sundeck, camper hookups, and a lounge. Of course the customary music, vendors, poker run, etc, etc. that makes a rally a rally.
